Growing Season

The 2007 growing season was fast and furious.  High temperatures caused our fruit to ripen earlier than usual resulting in wonderfully concentrated flavors.

Vineyards

The fertile soil and terrain of the Phinny Hill Vineyards are unique products of two types of the largest floods that have ever occurred - eruption of the greatest flood basalt lava flows known on earth and a series of catastrophic ice age glacial floods with flows so large that they permanently altered the landscape of Eastern Washington. At Phinny Hill, this combination of geography and geology combines to produce conditions for growing exceptional wine grapes from which many award-winning wines are produced. Fruit from Phinny Hill Vineyard makes up 50% of this wine. We also sourced fruit from Lonesome Spring Ranch in the Yakima Valley AVA for this wine. This exceptional vineyard produces limited quantities of high quality, ripe fruit with balanced acidity. Fruit from Lonesome Spring Ranch makes up the other 50% of this wine.

Tasting Notes

Traditionally known as a rustic version of Merlot, Malbec is inky, intense and packs a punch. Aromas of Violet, mineral, smokey meats and apples fill the glass. The mouth is loaded with raspberry chocolate, green tea, molé sauce and brandy elements. Plums, red pepper flakes and stewed raisin notes are complemented with hazelnut, tobacco and luscious dusty tannins. Its finish haunts you with elements of berry compote and cocoa chocolate tannins that linger on and on.

Growing Season

The 2008 growing season was fast and furious.  High temperatures caused our fruit to ripen earlier than usual resulting in wonderfully concentrated flavors.

Vineyards

We sourced our Grenache from the Lonesome Spring Ranch in the Yakima Valley AVA. This exceptional vineyard produces limited quantities of high quality, ripe fruit with balanced acidity. The Lonesome Spring Ranch vineyard is located in the warm, well-drained Rattlesnake Mountain bench near Benton City, WA.  Sitting at 1000 feet of elevation, the vines enjoy a South/Southeast exposure with Kootenay and Starbuck silt loam soils which shows through in the fruit as bright mineral notes.  It was established in 1996 and offers mature vines.  We enjoy our Malbec, Grenache, Viognier and Roussanne sourced here.

Vinification

Grapes were hand-picked, and sorted before being crushed, so only the finest fruit underwent fermentation. Select lots were pumped over during fermentation for gentle extraction of tannins and full fruit character. Post fermentation, aging was conducted in a combination of new and neutral French oak for 20 months.

Barrel composition

Post fermentation, the wine was aged neutral French oak for 15 months

Tasting Notes

Loaded with raspberry, blackberry and cranberry flavors. Accents of apricots, red hots, cherries and black licorice. The texture is silky and rich with sweet and spicy notes. Aromas of ripe cherry, anise, and fennel.  Medium in body with notes of honey on the rush of fruit on the palate.  A good backbone of acidity and minerality with a hint of tannin keep things in balance. The finish is long and lingers with a touch of ginger.  I recommend serving it at cellar temperature to highlight the fruit characteristics.
