2011 Tertulia Cellars Viognier, Yakima Valley, Lonesome Spring Vineyard ($18)
This Vioginer (with 19% Roussanne) strikes a fine balance of crispness and tropicality with its aromas of pear-apple, white peach, orange blossoms and acacia flowers, and fresh, lively white fruit flavors that show touches of apricot pit, melon rind and minerals. On the back, the subdued tropical notes recur with light squeezings of passion fruit, tangerine and a touch of green tea. Barrel fermentation and aging sur lie adds texture, and a touch of citrus gives the wine crispness. 18/20 points.
2011 Tertulia Cellars Rosé, Yakima Valley, Lonesome Spring Vineyard ($16)
A blend of 73% Mourvedre, 24% Counoise and 3% Grenache this wine shows a pinkish copper color and aromas of raspberry and red currant. The Counoise lifts the nose with exotic perfumes of rose petals, jasmine and litchee. The flavors are well extracted, but not overtly juicy (from 10 hours on the skins before fermentation in oak). As a result, the back picks up touches of orange peel and grape skin, followed by a Provençal-like lightly spiced dry finish. 18/20 points.
The results are in!
