June 2018 Wine Club Allocation

I couldn’t be happier. The sun is shining and everything in the Walla Walla Valley is green. The canopy on our grape vines are lush and beautiful. When I am not at work I spend as much time outside grilling and sipping on wine. Life is good, and we have some new club wines to make life even better!

2017 Viognier, Whistling Hills Estate Vineyard, Walla Walla Valley

I have heard Viognier succinctly described by our very own Kristine Bono as Chardonnay’s sassy little sister. Well put, considering ours is barrel fermented and sur lee aged. In contrast, Viognier is more floral with notes of stone fruits and a mouthwatering acidity. This Viognier pairs well with creamy cheeses and shellfish.

Winemaker’s Impressions

On the nose, this wine exhibits beautiful fruit notes of pears and white peach. Floral aromatics of lilacs, lavender, and honeysuckle give way to a subtle minerality. In the mouth acids are wonderfully balanced, finishing with a warm soft mouthfeel and a pleasant floral finish.

2016 Grenache, Riviere Galets Estate Vineyard, Walla Walla Valley

Pretentious, not this wine! Grenache is simply loveable. Bright jammy fruit and a little rustic makes this Grenache an easy drinker. I like it with a slight chill. Goes great with grilled salmon!

Winemaker’s Impressions

This wine is layered with complex fruit notes of raspberry preserves, cranberry, figs, and cassis liquor.  The fruit character mingles with aromatics of dried rose petals and crème fresh. On the palate, this wine exhibits notes of tart berry fruits and a pleasing smooth mouthfeel finishing with fresh raspberries.

2015 Syrah, Riviere Galets Estate Vineyard, Walla Walla Valley

Syrah is the most versatile accouterments to the backyard BBQ. It goes with a wide variety of grilled foods. I think it is due to its rustic nature, almost like this wine belongs outside in the wild. Don’t worry though this wine is domesticated and you won’t need to keep it on a leash!

Winemaker’s Impressions

This rustic yet complex Syrah has notes of strawberry preserves, pomegranate, blueberry, figs, olives, violets, and minerality. Lively acids dance on the palate of this medium plus bodied wine. Finally, the wine finishes with a lingering viscosity and notes of black licorice.
